New cycle laws in Queensland

Ride easy with new rules

A few cycling road rules are changing to make your ride on the road a safer and easier journey.

From 1 January 2015 you will be able to:

  1. ride across zebra and children’s crossings, as long as you stop and check it's safe to do so first (it's still ok to ride on the footpath too)
  2. ride in a bicycle lane or not, depending on your preference
  3. ride on a single lane roundabout like any other road user.

Why are these changes being made?

In 2013 a Queensland Parliamentary Committee looked at ways to improve the safety of cyclists.

As part of their review, it was suggested a few rules that may have seemed confusing or inconsistent be updated to remove confusion for cyclists and motorists.

These changes will make the rules more consistent for cyclists and allow them to use the road as legitimate road users.

What does this mean for me?

Whether you ride on 2 wheels, 4 or more, we all need to get along and share the road safely.

For all road users, we have prepared a ride easy with new rules fact sheet to help you understand what the changes will be and how cyclists can follow them.

Motorists, remember to stay wider of the rider and have a little patience and courtesy for your fellow road users as they follow these rules.

Changes to road rules will occur on 1 January 2015.
